Stella McCartney has revealed that the Duchess of Sussex chose her to design her wedding reception gown because she’s a “women’s woman”.
An estimated 1.9 billion people watched as Meghan Markle married Prince Harry back in May, first wearing a Givenchy wedding dress, designed by Clare Waight Keller, and then later changing into an evening gown by Stella McCartney.
But the designer – who also dressed Amal Clooney and Oprah for the royal nuptials – revealed to Elle UK that the bride approached her for more than just her ability to design “a beautiful dress”.
“Obviously I am a British designer, but I think being a woman and being a women’s woman played a part. They
are all women’s women. It’s a big deal.”
The eco-conscious designer explained how, usually, it’s she who approaches celebrities that she wants to dress: “I have had moments in my career where I’ve caught up with Gwyneth or Madonna and was like ‘Can I dress you for that?’ But this time around, they were drawn to me.”
This wasn’t the first time that the duchess had worn one of McCartney’s creations; the designer explained how they formed a close relationship prior to the wedding. “[Meghan] approached me and we worked on other things,” explained McCartney. “She wore other pieces of mine and we had a friendship.”
“And then she asked me to do her second wedding dress. I was honored and I still am.”
